Art exhibition day fourteen

Southern France

This is the largest painting I have ever painted – it took me four years! Its about 2m x 1m. I did other paintings in-between, but this oil took so long to dry that I only worked on it about once a month. I painted it in my old studio which was in the attic of the Hall, very hot in summer and impossibly cold in the winter. When it was finally finished, getting it down the attic stairs was ‘challenging’. It now resides at the Kings Head Hotel at Great Bircham………..

And here’s our new combine driver……………………

For a wedding present my husband gave me two things. A gold dollar that his father brought back from America (B’s father was actually in the ‘Gold Rush’, but that’s a story for another day). The other gift he gave me was a combine harvester! In those days of hands-on farming, I drove the combine and my husband drove the corn cart (tractor and trailer).

I’m proud to say that, when the combine was finally sold-on, the buyer wrote to say how clean and cared-for that combine was – and would I like the Handel’s Messiah tape back?

There was nothing more uplifting than being high up on the combine……………..from the top of the farm one can see the waves twinkling on the Wash, the amazing steeple of Snettisham Church and all manner of things between. The Hallelujah Chorus was a very fitting accompaniment to such a glorious view…………………….. happy days, well until it rained for the whole of harvest, or the combine broke down, or one of the farm labourers, when asked to take over what I’d been doing alone all night (working in the dryer barn), stoutly replied that he couldn’t do that as it was a two man job……………….we still jokingly have two man, one woman, jobs on the Estate!

More art tomorrow………………….

You are a woman of so many talents! I’m really enjoying the art exhibition, I don’t know how you manage to fit so much into your days, painting, knitting, sewing, dog walking, blog posting and the rest. Isn’t harvesting so satisfying.
