St Jean pied du port

Here I am, this is one of the main setting off points for the Camino, I expected a town bustling with pilgrims, but the place is quiet and the locals are quietly going about there daily lives. I did meet 2 plus one pilgrims at breakfast the plus one being an Italian guide the two ladies had hired to take them on the pilgramage. He and I communicated in the universal language of arm waving, nodding and pointing! They were hoping to get to Roncesvalles today which is 6 to 7 hours and a tough walk graded at number 4. I’m not being nearly so ambitious tomorrow and just hope to get to Valcarlos, still as steep but only about 4-5 hours, I know my limitations and besides this isn’t a race, it’s a time of contemplation and mindfulness.

I layered up and set forth to explore the almost pilgrimless town. First up to the citadel which it’s medievil walls surrounding an old and rather grand building

Back down into town and to the tourist board where I was directed to the Camino Office, (which was situated back up the ramparts of the Citadal, good training I expect) where a charming but rather bored young man was playing with his iPone. He gave me reims  of paper and an explanation on how to find the Camino when I set off in the morning. Because I’m not really great at finding my way I decided I would try and see if I could at lease get to the outskirts of town…….

So off I went, I crossed the river…..

Then I walked through the medievil streets a bit then I crossed the river again …. surely not the same river? Afraid so…

by now I realised my mistake, I must have taken a right turn instead of a left so I carried on undaunted and after a few more streets I, well, I crossed the river again….

I then arrived back at the pilgramage office, same nice young man, this time he gave me a map with pictures on it. I have to admit that I did expect more signs pointing “the way” but maybe this is just like 𝙻𝚒𝚏𝚎. One has to ask for some guidance and then find the right way on ones own.

Then I found the way to here…….

And I sat for a while, just being, nor worrying about getting lost, knowing that the way is there and I might go in the wrong direction at times but I will always find my way back…….

love Susan x

Please find someone to walk with or to follow and make sure that you are expected at a known time and place. The Pyrenees are dangerous at this time of year.

  5. Thanks Peter, there is a distinct lack of Pilgrims, so far I have met only three to talk to or follow. But I made it and have to admit it was tougher than I expected. But now you’ve reassured me that it’s now downhill all the way! That is what you meant to say isn’t it.? Love to you both xx x x x
